Introduction
Founded in Groningen in 1855, Wijnne Barends is one of the oldest active shipping companies in the world. Over 170 years in, we’re still as driven as on day one. Short sea is our home territory. We provide shipping, logistics and ship management, with access to the worldwide Spliethoff Group network for routes further afield.
We specialise in dry bulk and breakbulk cargo, including timber and steel products. We put the right vessel in the right place, with experienced people who know their cargo and trading area, backed by storage and transhipment at strategic locations. One thing never changes: our reliability, loyalty and drive to find solutions.
We deliver what we promise. If a solution doesn’t exist yet, we make it happen.

Our story
Founded by Johan Herman Wijnne and Barend Cornelis Barends in 1855. International from day one and still going strong.
Groningen · 1855
Two young entrepreneurs from Groningen establish a shipping company with a broad range of maritime services, from chartering and freight forwarding to agency and insurance, for both sea and inland shipping.
After the passing of co-founder Johan Herman Wijnne, Barend Cornelis Barends decides to retain the company name. Out of respect for the founder, it remains unchanged.

Wijnne Barends Logistics
Wijnne Barends Logistics (WBL) is a subsidiary of Wijnne & Barends’ Cargadoors- en Agentuurkantoren BV, founded in 1970 in response to market demand. It is part of the Spliethoff Group, the largest shipping company in the Netherlands. As a logistics service provider focusing on shipping handling in the Northern Netherlands, WBL operates three multimodal terminals, Farmsum, Delfzijl, and Eemshaven.
1970
Farmsum
The first terminal, behind the sea locks. Traditionally fully equipped for the handling of bundles of sawn timber.
2002
Delfzijl
Second terminal in the outer harbor. Suitable for larger seagoing vessels, equipped for containers, among other things.
2008
Eemshaven
Third terminal, doubled in size in 2018-19. Currently the largest terminal with the most activity, geared towards various commodities.
From our inception, we have collaborated with the client and sought the most creative and efficient logistical solution. We keep the promises we make. WBL stands for reliability and loyalty — we focus on long-term client relationships with the ambition to continuously surprise the client.
Organization
Since 2003, Spliethoff has been our majority shareholder. This partnership gives us the reach of an international network and the agility of a Groningen shipping company. From summer 2026, our shipping operations are based in Groningen. Logistics and Agency operate from Delfzijl.
